YARN is specifically for people aged 18-35 involved in rural industries. It’s an online community where young people can:
- communicate;
- collaborate;
- share ideas;
- strengthen networks; and in doing so
- strengthen the future of Australia’s rural industries.
YARN was established through the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s Advancing Agricultural Industries Programme to encourage greater consultation, representation and participation of young people in decision-making forums. Through YARN, young individuals are provided with the information and tools required to play a leading role in decision making for rural industries at all levels.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of the contribution of highly skilled and motivated people to the success of agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries and the need to recognise and embrace the diversity of people that make up these industries.
The Advancing Agricultural Industries Programme aims to increase the profile and contribution of young people and women working in rural industries through the new Pathways for Participation strategy announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Sussan Ley in August 2006.
The new strategy comprises of three complementary components:
- Building Skills and Knowledge;
- Developing Pathways; and
- Enhancing Opportunities.
The Advancing Agricultural Industries Programme also provides national agriculture, fisheries and forestry industries the opportunity to evaluate their current performance and improve their understanding of the industry’s operating environment. The outcome of this process is improved profitability, sustainability and competitiveness for the future.
