FRDC- National Seafood Industry Leadership Program 2008

The National Seafood Industry Leadership Program 2008 commences on 15th of April 2008 in Port
Lincoln and concludes on the 17th of September 2008 in Canberra.

The National Seafood Industry Leadership Program 2008 is the leadership platform being delivered
through funding from The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC)
and developed by Leading Industries. In 2008 the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program
2008 will managed and facilitated by Rural Training Initiatives’ Jill Briggs. Jill has been
an integral part of the delivery of the program throughout its history.

The National Seafood Industry Leadership Program 2008 is the only national industry specific
leadership program and was initially designed in consultation with seafood industry
people. In excess of ninety graduates of all ages and from all sectors of the industry
including processing, fishing, extension, exporters, importers, marketing,
deckhands and employees.

The course focuses on developing skills that participants can apply at three levels –
personal, business and national industry. They are also encouraged to develop and
implement plans associated with these three areas. The National Seafood Industry Leadership
Program 2008 participants will also be involved in a nationally strategic project.

Graduates have gone on to apply their skills to a wide variety of areas including
regional network development, regional and state industry association boards and
reference committees and effective business management. The content of the
program ensures that participants are exposed to handling conflict, effective
communication, efficient meetings, high performance team building, managing
change and media training.

The Program is designed for people wishing to take up leadership roles within the
seafood industry. These roles maybe at a sector level or regional level but
participants may also have national and international leadership aspirations. The
focus, however, of the program is for participants to develop an understanding of
how to impact positively, resulting in constructive outcomes for the seafood industry
nationally.

Dr Patrick Hone, Executive Director of Fisheries Research and Development
Corporation said, “The FRDC is committed to supporting the leadership development
of people to whom the industry will entrust its future. The seafood industry is
changing very quickly and the industry must invest in developing people to initiate
and manage change across the board. There is always a role for leadership,
regardless of your position."

Dr Hone then spoke of the impact of past programs “The vision and energy past
participants share provide many benefits to the seafood industry as they transform
their skills into their own businesses and in turn the seafood industry,” said Dr
Hone.

The course content is tailored to meet the needs of the seafood industry and has
been developed and modified in consultation with seafood industry personnel. The
FRDC and Rural Training Initiatives are delivering the program and through funding
from the FRDC and sponsorship from Sydney Fish Market.

Program manager and facilitator, Jill Briggs, Rural Training Initiatives, believes having all the
industry in the room learning together adds enormous value. “To see people
succeed in achieving specific goals through increased leadership capacity is
definitely my high point,” said Ms Briggs. “The National Seafood Industry Leadership Program has
received enormous support from the industry during the years that Leading
Industries delivered the program and we look forward to the industry supporting the
new phase of national leadership development”
